Consumers now have another tool at their disposal in the fight against identity theft. Come on down to Wray's Thriftway in Yakima, WA this Saturday between 10am-2pm and get all your potentially identity incriminating documents shredded…free of charge!
The event is being sponsored by a local law enforcement group striving to reduce identity theft, and is being sponsored by Wray's Thriftway. Washington is currently among the top ten worst states in the nation for identity theft, and as Attorney General Spokesperson Kristin Alexander, explains, ""That's not a Top 10 list that we want to be on," adding, "Prevention is the No. 1 tool (to combat ID theft). Consumers are always the first line of defense."
Consumers may think that identity theft is largely the result of high profile events such as the when the national Veterans databases was compromised last year, but law enforcement officials explain that the usual manner that criminals tale over your identity is through your discarded documentation. Criminals can start compromising your identity with the information on a cancelled check, pay stub or utility bill, all documents that used to be trashed or recycled without care.
Identity theft advocacy groups are trying to change the public's perception in an effort to reduce rising identity crimes. They stress that prevention is really the key, and being aware of your personal documents and proper disposal of them, are great ways to keep your identity safe.
This shredorama is scheduled to be the first of many, as the organizers are taking it round 29 cities in the state. In addition to the free shredding provided, consumers will also benefit from speeches being organized on the subject of identity protection.
Venue Of the shredathon is the parking lot of Wray's Thriftway at the Chalet Mall, corner of 56th and Summitview avenues |
