About 300 persons that live in Kansas City were the victims of a local identity theft ring which stole personal information and filed fraudulent tax returns seeking more than $13 million in refunds. About 17 of the ring members were indicted in Kansas City last week. The only ID theft protection company in the country called ID Watchdog, is waiving their first month's monitoring fee for all residents of Kansas City to be able to determine how well they have been victimized by identity theft.
The President of ID Watchdog, Justin Yurek said, "Identity theft is the nation's fastest growing crime, affecting millions of Americans annually. This incident in Kansas City reminds us anyone can be at risk at any time. We believe it is in the best interest of Kansas City residents to provide our services until all citizens can be sure their personal information has not been compromised."
ID Watchdog sensitizes customers to a potential problem, and also settles any misuse of a customer's identity.
Statistics from the Federal Trade Commission says, businesses lose more than $50 billion and consumers spend $5 billion yearly to recover from identity theft.
