SpendOnLife.com, an online credit and identity theft education resource, has just posted its new Identity Theft Recovery Kit.
The kit is a fairly comprehensive resource for identity theft victims. It clearly explains identity theft prevention and how it can happen. We especially liked the unique personalized checklist, in which a victim selects his or her specific situation and follows the steps indicated to resolve it. It covers both potential identity theft (a lost wallet, or notice of a data breach) and severe cases like unauthorized account openings.
The SpendOnLife kit also features contact information that an identity theft victim will need during the recovery process. Lastly, the kit encourages documenting every step taken to avoid identity theft, resolve the damage, and provides blank log sheets that help victims stay organized and keep accurate, detailed records.
One criticism we have of the kit is that it doesn’t go in as much depth about identifying and resolving medical identity theft, in which a thief gives your name or insurance information to receive drugs or treatment. The kit is geared primarily towards financial cases of identity theft related to bank accounts, loans, and even credit card fraud.
The kit comes in PDF format, and can be read on screen or printed out. (SpendOnLife suggests printing it out and placing it in a 3-ring binder, along with other documentation of the case.) SpendOnLife’s goal is to “help ID theft victims recover from the crime faster and with less “headache.” We think victims will find it beneficial because it clearly explains the right combination of steps to take and offers ways to stay organized during the recovery process.
