A new credit freeze law has been enacted to allow Texans to freeze their credit report without having to obtain a police report.
The resident can freeze their credit report; potential identity thieves are unable to get credit in the person's name because the creditor will be blocked from checking credit history without permission.
Linda Foley of the Identity Theft Resource Center in San Diego states, “It’s one of the most proactive measures a consumer can take. It’s like putting your credit report in a safe deposit box for which you and the credit reporting agency has keys.”
Texas as of last week joined 34 other states that allow residents to freeze their credit reports before the identity theft and/or fraud can take place.
