Members of the military are vulnerable to identity theft on various fronts, especially in the case of military IDs with social security numbers (SSNs) on them.
The Department of Defense (DoD) has printed social security numbers (SSNS) on military ID cards since 1967, and these IDs often cause terrible identity theft incidents.
President Bush recently signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which requires the DoD to study the removal of SSNs from military ID cards, and the department's recommendations are due in spring 2008.
Military personnel should consider this option before deployment: drafting powers of attorney for financial and identity theft issues.
